Montana Physical Therapy Clinic’s Data Indicate Nearly Half of All Patients Seek Relief From Spine Pain, Corroborating American Physical Therapy Association Survey Results

KALISPELL, Mont., April XX, 2012 – According to Professional Therapy Associates, a Flathead Valley, Montana, physical therapy clinic, spine pain is one of the most common ailments reported by its patients. The clinic’s records show that over a six-month period, 46% of patients undergoing physical therapy treatment sought relief from some form of spine pain. These statistics corroborate the findings of a national survey recently conducted by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).(1)

The 2012 APTA Low Back Pain Survey found that 61% of respondents had experienced some form of low back pain. Of those, 69% felt it affected their daily lives, either by disrupting exercise routines, interrupting sleep or impacting their work, family activities or travel.(2)

“It’s clear that spine pain can be a debilitating condition for many people at some time in their lives,” said Blaine Stimac, owner and CEO of Professional Therapy Associates. “Just as the APTA survey indicates, our patients find that back pain affects their quality of life. It can result in lost time at work, interrupted sleep patterns, the inability to care for family or being unable to perform simple tasks, such as driving, doing laundry or tying their shoes. Fortunately, physical therapy treatment has been shown to be effective in reducing or eliminating spine pain and helping patients return to their normal activities.”

Stimac notes that the causes of back pain vary, but often stem from overuse, strain or injury. Some patients may suffer from chronic conditions such as osteoporosis, lumbar spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, while others have no clear reason for their symptoms. No matter what the cause, Stimac maintains that back or neck pain should not be ignored.

“Too often, people suffer with back pain because they believe it comes with age. The fact is that in many cases, back pain can be successfully treated without drugs, injections or surgery,” he explained. “We find that patients with moderate to severe spine pain achieve measurable improvements in range of motion and physical well being after completing the recommended course of physical therapy treatment.”

Physical therapists are specifically trained to identify and isolate the cause of a patient’s discomfort. They incorporate manual techniques, strength and conditioning exercises, and therapeutic treatments to bring relief from pain and promote healing. Each patient is thoroughly evaluated and given a customized physical therapy treatment plan that focuses on healing the underlying cause of his or her pain, rather than covering up symptoms with drugs or invasive procedures.

“Whether patients define success as being able to return to work, care for their family or simply tie their shoes without pain, physical therapy can help them attain those goals,” said Stimac. “Our team of Montana-licensed physical therapists has helped countless patients achieve measurable results. That’s why we’re known as the ‘spine specialists’ of Flathead Valley.”

Laura W., who received treatment for spine pain, reported, “I am no longer experiencing continuous neck and back pain, and no longer have to take painkillers for my neck and back. There is no discomfort, strains or tweaks when I try and do basic activities. I feel 100% rehabilitated, and I’m glad my doctor recommended I come to Professional Therapy Associates for my physical therapy sessions.”

To help educate prospective patients on the benefits of physical therapy, Professional Therapy Associates offers free health and injury screenings, valued at $100. Stimac and his team offer these free consultations to all Flathead Valley residents to demonstrate how physical therapy can bring relief from pain and a return to better health. Individuals who wish to schedule a free health and injury screening may register online at http://www.ptflathead.com/free-consultation.

Avoid Injury with Proper Stretching

Most people don’t seek physical therapy until many years of pain or after an injury has occurred- in which the pain becomes unbearable. Physical therapists are experts at identifying reasons why this nagging pain even exists and knowing factors that predispose someone to injury. One of the most common reasons and predisposing factors is tightness in muscles and joints.

The body’s musculoskeletal system is comprised of bones that provide structure and support and muscles that allow the body to move through contraction and relaxation. A combination of muscles, ligaments and tendons work together to help the bones of the joints to move easily and freely. Regular stretching allows these activities to continue at optimal levels and offer benefits that far exceed the investment of time and energy required to do it.

So what benefits does stretching provide? For starters, stress relief and enhanced flexibility, posture, coordination and circulation.

Increased Flexibility

Your range of motion tends to decrease as you age. Therefore doing anything you can do maintain and even improve your flexibility will improve the quality of life you enjoy as you grow older. Stretching is the best thing you can do to toward that end. In turn, flexibility helps maintain muscle function and prevents stiffness and joint degeneration as well as permanent changes in your posture.

Excellent Posture

Good posture encourages internal and external confidence. Frequent stretching keeps your back and shoulder muscles from getting tight, which is key to obtaining and maintaining proper posture. Good posture is how back pain and its related headaches are kept at bay.

Surprisingly, stretching your hip flexors improves your posture. When the hip flexors, (otherwise known as the muscles of the gluteus maximus) – take this out, incorrect info; or you could put the psoas and quadriceps, are shortened due to inactivity such as sitting for prolonged periods, the hamstrings are forced to take over the weight of the individual when standing. This throws the hips forward and curves the spine, which results in bad posture. Stretched hip flexors improve posture.

Improved Circulation

When blood flows to your muscles, it carries with it the nutrients needed for optimal performance and carries away waste products that can contribute to injury or illness. Stretching increases that blood flow, keeping you healthy and moving easily.

Stretching for improved circulation is particularly important for those with limited mobility, as it helps keep healthy muscle tissue to maintain its vitality and can help injured muscles recover more quickly.

Enhanced Coordination

Coordination is the ability to control your limbs. Stretching requires you to focus attention on movement, thus strengthening coordination between the brain’s impulses and the body’s resulting movements.

Stretching also improves your balance by keeping your joints flexible, enabling you to move freely and decreasing the likelihood of falling and injuring yourself.

Stress Relief

Stress causes us to be distracted, which increases the likelihood of injury. Stress also tightens the muscles as well as the tendons and ligaments attached to your joints, causing pain in the form of back pain, tension headaches, a pinched neck and tight shoulders.

Stretching is most effective for getting rid of stress and allowing the muscles to literally release it and get rid of its toxicities through increased blood flow. A relaxed body helps you to think more clearly and rest more easily.

How to Stretch

Every muscle in your body, no matter its size or shape, is composed of small fibers that contract, relax and lengthen as you stretch. To avoid injury, it’s important that stretching is done correctly. Proper form is vital to proper stretching.

To ensure you receive all the benefits stretching provides, follow these tips:

Warm up first. Stretching a cold muscle causes injury. Warm up your body with a low impact activity such as walking for a couple minutes to get your heart rate up, increase blood flow and warm your muscles before you stretch.

Hold the stretch still. It takes time for a muscle to lengthen. Therefore you need to hold your stretches for at least 30 seconds to allow the tissues to lengthen. Tighter muscles may require more time. Bouncing while you stretch causes your muscles to tear. As these tears heal, they build scar tissue that ultimately decreases your flexibility and range of motion. Keep your stretches still.

Relax and breathe through the stretch. Breathing is critical to proper stretching. Remember, muscle relaxation is part of the cycle of stretching. If you hold your breath you can’t relax. You must relax your body to lengthen the muscle. Breathe freely through stretch, going a little farther, if you can, as you exhale.

Pay attention to pain. If you begin to feel pain as you stretch, you’re overdoing it. Back away to a point where you don’t feel any pain and hold that position.

Stretch each side equally. Your body is symmetrical by design. To ensure proper balance, range of motion and coordination, it’s important that what you stretch on one side, you stretch on the other as well.

Stretch before and after physical activity. While light stretching before an activity avoids injury during the activity, more thorough stretching after the activity provides insurance against future injury. You may find you’re able to stretch just a little further than you did prior to the activity.

Get Results and Reduce Pain With Physical Therapy

You may be surprised at the wide range of health problems physical therapists can treat. From alleviating pain to restoring mobility, physical therapy results in a greater quality of life for countless patients. Some have experienced an injury or accident, or are recovering from surgery. Others are suffering with arthritis or back pain. And many patients seek help because of a decline in their ability to perform everyday tasks. While their symptoms may differ, people of all ages can benefit from physical therapy treatment.

Physical therapy can help you get moving again, pain-free, and without costly drugs or invasive procedures. When you follow the personalized treatment plan developed by your physical therapist, your body will begin to heal – and you may notice an immediate improvement in your condition.

Physical Therapy Results Can Be Yours

If you are ready to feel better and return to your normal level of activity, physical therapy can deliver the results you want. Physical therapists are specially trained to identify and treat neuromuscular disorders. They apply their training, research and proven techniques to reduce pain, improve joint function and increase range of motion in every area of the body.

By employing the appropriate combination of manual therapies, including massage and mobilization, and passive therapies such as cold packs, heat and electrical stimulation, your physical therapist begins the healing process at the source of your problem. In addition, most patients begin a series of exercises and stretching techniques to improve muscle strength and flexibility.

Your physical therapist will also educate you on proper form to prevent re-injury, and help you understand what’s happening in your body, so you can learn how to protect the injured area as it heals. Much of your program may be done at home, using your body weight, elastic bands or light hand-weights.

Physical therapists are focused on helping each patient find relief from debilitating pain while stimulating the body’s healing power. They also share their expertise, so that you achieve the highest level of physical therapy results in the shortest period of time. Each patient’s program will vary in length, but the goal is to bring significant improvement over progressive visits so you can quickly return to your normal activities.

Physical Therapy Success Stories

On any given day, people from all walks of life and every age group begin physical therapy programs – the first step to improved health and wellness. Here’s what real patients have to say about their physical therapy experience:

“When I first started [physical therapy] I could barely function well physically. I was very limited in mobility and my pain was at an 8. Today, I have complete physical mobility with no pain. … I really feel great and am glad to be back to normal.” Trina H.

“Pain reduced by 90%, range of motion back to 95%, strength back by 95% in most directions. I’m confident of a full recovery with home exercises.” Will W.

“Since I began physical therapy, I’m able to wake up in the morning without horrible neck pain, cracking and popping. I also have increased strength in my upper body, which has made every day tasks much easier.” Shelley S.

These stories demonstrate that every patient has a unique story. What’s yours?

Are you experiencing pain, weakness or restricted range of motion?

Do you want to return to an active lifestyle?

Are you having trouble balancing while walking or running?

Have you started withdrawing from your favorite activities, due to physical limitations?

Do you simply want to feel better and improve your health?

If you answered, “yes” to any of these questions, you could benefit from a physical therapy consultation.

The Professional Therapy Associates Staff Is Dedicated to Your Health

Professional Therapy Associates Invites Flathead Valley Residents to Attend Free Presentation on How to Handle Your Aches and Pains

Montana Physical Therapy Practice Will Present Two Seminars on How to Manage and Treat Osteoarthritis; Events Will Be Held March 5 in Kalispell and March 8 in Whitefish

KALISPELL, Mont., February 20, 2012 – Professional Therapy Associates will host two free arthritis seminars at its Flathead Valley clinics. Licensed Montana physical therapists Trevor Eccles and Joel Shehan of Professional Therapy Associates and Dr. Erik Schroeder of Flathead Valley Orthopedics will lead the presentations, which will provide information on osteoarthritis and available treatments. They will also share tips and exercises for alleviating arthritis pain and stiffness, and answer questions from the audience. All attendees are eligible for door prize giveaways and a free physical therapy screening.

The arthritis seminars are open to all Flathead Valley residents, and will take place on March 5 and March 8, 2012, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The March 5 presentation will be held at Professional Therapy Associates’ flagship clinic, located at 1234 Whitefish Stage Road in Kalispell, and will feature Eccles and Schroeder. The March 8 event will be held at The Wave, 1250 Baker Avenue in Whitefish, and will be hosted by Shehan and Schroeder.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is estimated to affect nearly 27 million adults in the U.S., including 13.9% of adults aged 25 and older, and 33.6% of individuals aged 65 and older. While osteoarthritis can affect any joint in the body, it is most common in the hands, knees, hips and spine – and often has debilitating results. In fact, the CDC reports that 80% of patients with osteoarthritis have some degree of limited movement, and 25% cannot perform key activities for daily living.*

“Many arthritis sufferers know little about the disease or how to treat it,” said Blaine Stimac, owner and CEO of Professional Therapy Associates. “While the causes of osteoarthritis are unknown, it occurs when cartilage breaks down and wears away, and the bone beneath degenerates. Affected joints become inflamed, stiff and painful. Osteoarthritis can seriously impact a person’s range of motion, mobility and quality of life if left untreated. That’s why we’re proud to present these free arthritis seminars to the local community. Our goal is to provide important information on treatments that can improve the overall health and wellness of area residents suffering from this common and debilitating disease.”

Stimac noted that the symptoms of arthritis include pain that gets worse as the day goes on; decreased motion or swelling in the joint; and clicking sounds when moving the joint. He encourages anyone experiencing these symptoms to attend the free information sessions, which will explain how physical therapy treatment for arthritis can relieve pain, improve mobility and enhance a patient’s overall quality of life.

Physical therapy uses a series of stretching and strengthening exercises to increase range of motion and stability in arthritic joints. A qualified physical therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient, employing a variety of therapeutic techniques, exercises, and education on proper form and weight management, when needed.

Attendees at the Professional Therapy Associates information sessions will have an opportunity to learn much more about arthritis, particularly arthritis of the knee, and get answers to their questions from the experts leading the presentations:

The Importance of Preventative Care With Physical Therapy

When pain strikes unexpectedly, it can affect every aspect of your life. That’s when it’s time to explore how physical therapy services can help. Whether you’re active in a sport and have suffered an injury, or are experiencing pain when moving through your normal activities, it’s important to pay attention to your symptoms – and take care of them before they get worse.

Many people have been taught to ignore pain, work through it or to just “walk it off.” But when you postpone treatment, your problem can get worse. Pain causes your body to adjust and compensate in an effort to minimize discomfort – however, this can actually lead to more serious issues. Here are some examples:

• A runner experiencing knee pain may alter his gait, which could cause new injuries in the hip or back.
• A tennis player who feels her range of motion is declining may ignore the problem, hoping it will get better on its own. She may replace good form with improper mechanics, which can cause back or shoulder strain. And bad form can affect her success on the court, reducing her enjoyment of the game.
• An office worker who repeats the same motions day after day starts experiencing neck pain. He alters his seating arrangement to compensate, but ends up with pain across his shoulders.
• A gardener’s osteoarthritis pain is affecting her ability to bend and stretch during her regular chores. She chalks it up to growing older, and believes she has to live with the pain.

Each of these individuals can benefit from preventative care through physical therapy. Because pain can occur even when you’re taking good care of yourself and keeping fit, going through your normal daily activities, or simply playing with your kids or grandkids, it’s important to know how to handle the problem before it gets worse.

How Is Physical Therapy Used to Treat Pain?
If you’re experiencing discomfort anywhere in your body – your joints, low back, hips, neck, shoulders or knees – a physical therapist can help; especially when you seek treatment at the first sign of pain. Physical therapists are highly trained experts in body mechanics, who possess the education and skills to pinpoint the underlying cause of your pain. Physical therapy services include monitoring motor function, teaching proper form to prevent further injuries, and relieving pain without drugs or invasive procedures.

When you first meet with a physical therapist, your consultation will typically begin with a dialogue about your problem, along with a review of your daily activities and goals for treatment. Your physical therapist will assess your pain, range of motion, muscle strength and overall condition, and then develop a personalized treatment plan that will put you back on the road to wellness.

Physical Therapy Services Can Eliminate and Prevent Pain
Your physical therapist will employ a number of techniques to relieve your pain fast – so you can start improving your muscle strength and return to your activities. Through a combination of manual therapies, such as mobilization and massage, and passive therapies, like heat, cold and electrical stimulation, your body will begin to heal itself.

By relieving the discomfort you’re feeling, your physical therapist can then help you start to strengthen muscles and increase your range of motion through stretching and conditioning exercises. You’ll learn proper form, so you lessen the chance of re-injury. And your physical therapist will coach you on how to enjoy a healthier lifestyle. Soon, you’ll feel stronger and more empowered to take care of your health. And you’ll be able to return to work, the tennis court, the running trail or the garden without pain.

Personal Attention Helps You Recover From Pain
Remember, every individual is different. While you may experience the same type of pain as a friend or family member, the underlying causes could be completely different. In addition, you have your own habits as well as distinct patterns of movement and alignment, so your body will move differently. That’s why it’s important to be evaluated by a physical therapist who will personalize your treatment and address the source of your pain before it gets worse – or leads to even more debilitating problems.

Pain is not normal, and usually won’t go away on its own. Pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Fortunately, with preventive care through physical therapy, you don’t have to live with pain or let it affect your quality of life. And if you’re interested in exploring physical therapy treatment in Flathead Valley, Montana, you can get started for free!

Feel Better and Get More Done With Physical Therapy

You may know that physical therapy can help you recover from an injury or accident. But did you know a physical therapy wellness program can improve your overall fitness, mobility and enjoyment of life? When you’re able to perform your daily activities without pain or joint stiffness, you’ll feel better – and you could even get more done. A skilled physical therapist can help you feel great and get in shape with a custom wellness plan designed for your capabilities, strength and range of motion, and based on your personal fitness goals.

Step One: Set Your Fitness Goals

What does fitness mean to you? Depending on your age, current activity level and lifestyle, your goals may differ from those of your friends and family members. Examples of fitness goals might include:

I compete in my favorite sport. I need to be in top condition and injury-free.

I’m an avid gardener, and would like to increase my back strength and flexibility to avoid muscle strain.

I have a desk job, and would like to prevent repetitive stress injuries to my hands, neck and shoulders.

I’d like to be able to play with my kids, go for bike rides and enjoy our active vacations.

I’d like continue running throughout my lifetime – without injury.

I have an active job and would like to get through my day without pain.

I’m not as young as I used to be. I want to remain independent as long as possible, and to dress, cook, shop and care for myself without pain.

I have joint pain; I need to lose weight and improve my mobility.

I’d like to be able to take long walks and go dancing with my spouse again.

I miss having the energy to run errands, take care of my family and enjoy life.

Do you recognize your own concerns among these examples? While each individual has different needs, everyone can benefit from physical therapy. A wellness program designed by your physical therapist can help you reach your goals. But first, you need to decide what they are.

Step Two: A Physical Therapy Evaluation

What if you can’t pinpoint the cause of your discomfort? No need to worry – a physical therapist is trained to evaluate your condition. Physical therapists are experts in body mechanics, and they undergo extensive education in diagnosing problems with the musculoskeletal system. Their expertise also includes anatomy, physiology and cardiopulmonary function.

Once your evaluation is complete, you and your physical therapist will discuss your lifestyle and fitness goals. He or she will then design a custom fitness plan to increase your strength, flexibility and endurance. Since achieving optimum physical therapy results requires your participation and input, you’ll be fully engaged and empowered to take charge of your health and wellness.

Step Three: Start Feeling Better

When you partner with a physical therapist for your wellness plan, you’ll learn how to exercise with proper form and reduce the chance of injury. You may be directed to perform certain exercises, and you’ll receive relevant physical therapy tips for better health. Under the guidance of a physical therapist, you’ll enjoy all the advantages of a traditional fitness center without the intimidation that can sometimes occur when you face unfamiliar machines and equipment.

By sticking to your physical therapy fitness plan, you’ll feel and see results – sooner than you may think! A regular exercise routine will give you more energy, improve your range of motion, increase muscle strength and endurance, and support your joints. You’ll once again be able to engage in activities that currently pose a challenge, and you may find that you’re capable of doing more than you ever thought possible.

Step Four: Get More Done

Regardless of your current fitness level, a physical therapy wellness program can help you return to the active lifestyle you may have been missing. Imagine being able to walk, dance, garden, run, bike and perform your daily activities, pain free.

As you continue with your fitness plan, your physical therapist will assess your condition and may recommend more challenging exercises – always keeping your goals and abilities in mind. With the help of a qualified physical therapy professional, you’ll see the difference in how your body moves, looks and functions. You’ll perform routine movements without discomfort – and you’ll sleep better, because pain won’t keep you tossing and turning all night.

Once you’re feeling stronger and more flexible, you may find you’re ready to increase the intensity of your activities and take on new challenges. Being fit means you’re able to say “yes” to more of the fun that life has to offer. Taking a hike, playing 18 holes of golf, dancing the night away or running a marathon can all be achievable when your body is strong and properly conditioned. And when you partner with a physical therapist to become more fit, your ability to take on new challenges increases. Instead of, “Sorry, I can’t,” you’ll be saying, “Yes, I’d love to!”

Increase Your Activity and Change Your Life With Physical Therapy

If your lifestyle has become more sedentary than you’d like, it’s easy to make a change for the better. With guidance, encouragement and safe instruction from a physical therapist, you can soon be working out and improving your fitness – no matter what shape you’re in now.

If you’re seeking the services of a Montana physical therapist, you’ll be in very good hands with Professional Therapy Associates. Owner Blaine Stimac and his team of caring physical therapists will work closely with you to design a personal fitness program that will help you achieve your goals and enjoy life to the fullest.

Get Results With Professional Therapy Associates

You no longer have to sit on the sidelines. Make the call to Professional Therapy Associates for your personal evaluation, and get started on a new life of fun and fitness. Choose from four convenient locations: North Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls or Flathead Health and Fitness in Downtown Kalispell.

Analysis of Professional Therapy Associates Patients Reveals 50/50 Split Between Physical Therapy Treatment for Rehab vs. Chronic Pain and Other Conditions

KALISPELL, Mont., December 19, 2011 – While many people associate physical therapy solely with injury rehabilitation, Professional Therapy Associates analyzed its physical therapy services to determine the percentage of patients undergoing rehabilitative therapy versus other forms of treatment. The Northwest Montana physical therapy practice found that approximately half of its patients are receiving treatment for injury, illness or post-surgery rehab, while the remaining half are using physical therapy to address a variety of other conditions or attain health, fitness and lifestyle goals.

“Physical therapy is widely recognized for its effectiveness in helping patients recover and regain full mobility after an injury, severe illness or surgery. However, it’s a common misconception that physical therapy is only used for rehabilitative purposes – statistically, one in two patients visit us for reasons other than rehab,” said Blaine Stimac, owner and CEO of Professional Therapy Associates. “Our physical therapists are experts at rehab therapy, but they also treat patients for conditions ranging from chronic pain, arthritis and repetitive strain to headaches, sleep problems and balance issues. They also provide strength, flexibility and endurance training to athletes and individuals looking to improve their overall health and fitness.”

Physical therapists undergo extensive training in biomechanics and the musculoskeletal system, which is why they are qualified to help patients increase mobility, alleviate pain and improve fitness. Stimac elaborated on some of the physical therapy services his team provides beyond injury and surgery rehabilitation:

Back Pain – “Many people immediately think of chiropractors when they have back pain, but physical therapy can effectively treat back pain as well as pain in adjacent areas, such as the neck, shoulders and hips,” explained Stimac. “Some people find that their back pain returns even after being treated by a chiropractor. This often happens when a chiropractor is correcting the issuing but not providing the necessary stabilization. This is where a physical therapist can help.”

Arthritis – Stimac notes that individuals with arthritis often have stiff joints because they avoid movements that may exacerbate their pain. However, by not moving or exercising those joints, arthritis sufferers often find the pain and stiffness only get worse. Physical therapists can teach patients exercises that will minimize pain and stiffness, and strengthen muscles that support the joints.

Desk Pain – Professionals who work with computers or at a desk often suffer from a host issues as a result of sitting for hours in a fixed position and performing repetitive movements. Physical therapy can assist with many different types of work-related pain – from back pain and neck stiffness to headaches and repetitive stress injuries. Not only will physical therapists help to ease patients’ pain, but they will also demonstrate how to avoid related problems in the future.

Sleep-Related Issues – According to Stimac, many individuals experience fatigue or have difficulty sleeping as a result of chronic pain. Conversely, there are others who may sleep well but in awkward positions that cause neck and shoulder pain during their waking hours. He explains that physical therapists are skilled in determining the cause of such conditions, and can provide treatments, exercises and advice that will help resolve the issue.

“When patients come to us with chronic pain or other complaints, we’ll identify the underlying cause, alleviate their pain or discomfort, and show them how to fix whatever is creating the problem in the first place,” said Stimac. “I would encourage anyone experiencing pain, stiffness or limited mobility to schedule a physical therapy evaluation. Montana residents can request a free consultation at any of our four Flathead Valley physical therapy clinics if they’d like to learn more about our treatments and explore whether physical therapy is the right choice for them.”

How a Physical Therapist Can Help You Get Fitter and Stronger – Even if You Haven’t Had an Accident or Injury

Are you ready to focus on fitness, for a stronger body and healthier lifestyle? Why not try physical therapy for strength and fitness? More people are learning that physical therapy can be an effective component of a comprehensive fitness plan. You don’t need to wait until you’ve been injured or had an accident to take advantage of physical therapy’s many benefits. You can start now!

Working With a Physical Therapist for Fitness

Implementing physical therapy for strength and fitness offers a number of advantages. Physical therapists are experts at strengthening muscles and improving joint flexibility to support your overall health and long-term mobility. With extensive training in the musculoskeletal system, your physical therapist is qualified to teach you the most effective exercises and techniques to improve your fitness. You’ll also learn proper form, to avoid injuries.

When partnering with a physical therapist, the first steps will be assessing your current fitness level, addressing any issues that are causing pain or discomfort and establishing your goals. Your physical therapist will then develop an individualized program that fits your abilities and moves you toward your objectives.

Another advantage of physical therapy is that the exercises and techniques used in your program will be based in evidence, clinical research and testing, rather than the current fitness fads. Not only do physical therapists receive ongoing training in the latest scientific findings and effective new modalities, but they are also known for their personal touch. Your physical therapist will be focused on you as an individual, and on your specific fitness needs.

Anyone Can Become Stronger and More Fit

Physical therapy benefits are available for everyone. People of all ages, all body types and widely varying levels of fitness can reap the advantages of physical therapy. While it can feel intimidating to enroll in a fitness program at certain health clubs and weightlifting gyms, you’ll find working out with a physical therapist to be a comfortable experience – no matter what shape you’re in.

At a physical therapy center, all first-time visitors will receive a thorough briefing in how the fitness equipment works, and how to exercise properly at home. Ongoing assessments and increasing challenges will keep you on target to reach your goals. And because you’ll be working out under the guidance of a physical therapist, you won’t have to worry about exercise-related injuries. Before long, you will start feeling stronger, more flexible, agile and fit – and you’ll see the results in the mirror.

Partner With Professional Therapy Associates for Optimum Health

Whether you’re looking to get fit or build strength, physical therapy can help you enjoy a more active lifestyle and achieve optimum health. If you’re ready to begin and are seeking a qualified physical therapist in Montana, you’ll find many physicians and satisfied patients recommend the experts at Professional Therapy Associates. Owner Blaine Stimac and his team are dedicated to serving the needs of Flathead Valley residents, and offer a full range of treatments and fitness programs that are designed to help you attain your goals.

Perhaps you’ve been yearning for the life you enjoyed when you were younger, when your body was healthy and fit. If lack of fitness is keeping you from pursuing activities you enjoy, you have the power to change it.
Professional Therapy Associates Reports That Recent Passage of Workers’ Compensation Reform Bill Has Not Impeded Injured Workers’ Access to Physical Therapy Services

KALISPELL, Mont., December 2011 – Montana physical therapists were among the many healthcare professionals to voice support for House Bill (HB) 334, which was designed to reduce Montana’s workers’ compensation insurance premiums, and which Governor Brian Schweitzer signed into law in April 2011.* Professional Therapy Associates recently conducted a review of its patients with work-related injuries to determine the impact of the bill’s passage, and found patients receiving workers’ compensation benefits have maintained the same level of access to physical therapy services since the new law went into effect.

“Many of us in the healthcare industry recognized the necessity of lowering workers’ compensation insurance premiums; we just wanted to ensure that injured workers would still be able to access the same rehabilitation services they were entitled to under the previous system,” stated Blaine Stimac, owner and CEO of Professional Therapy Associates in Flathead Valley, Montana. “Physical therapy plays an important role in helping employees recover from job-related accidents and return to work. Since the new law has gone into effect, I’m happy to report that individuals who require rehabilitative treatment have been able to continue receiving the same quality care from the physical therapists in our clinics.”

Workers’ compensation insurance provides income and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of their job. HB 334 addressed medical costs and benefits under Montana’s workers’ compensation system. While the new law limits medical benefits to five years from the date of injury, it gives workers the right to appeal for a two-year extension. Among the advantages of the new system are a streamlined treatment process, fewer administrative requirements and additional tools to help employees stay at work after an injury.**

Physical therapists are experts in the musculoskeletal system; their training enables them to help patients regain full mobility after an injury or surgery, while alleviating pain. As Stimac explains, “Our goal is to get the injured employee back to work by gaining control over painful areas, restoring proper mobility and biomechanics, establishing comprehensive and functional strengthening programs to do in the clinic and at home, and training the worker on correct use of their injured area and continuation of their home program to minimize chance of re-injury.”

Stimac notes that an effective physical therapy program supports the aims of Montana’s new workers’ compensation system by facilitating employees’ return to work as quickly and safely and possible. And by teaching employees how to avoid injuries, it can also help to reduce future workers’ compensation claims.

“I’m proud of the service our practice provides to Montana’s injured workers. We’re honored that so many patients have made us their provider of choice in recognition of our outstanding team of physical therapists, state-of-the-art facilities and proven track record of physical therapy results. It’s rewarding to see the progress our patients make under our care, and very satisfying to help them achieve their goals and return to work,” asserted Stimac. “I’m glad that lawmakers recognized the role Montana physical therapists play in employees’ rehabilitation, and that they empowered us to continue doing what we do best – helping our patients find freedom from pain and fully recover from their injuries.”
